1. The short version

1. Choose your university.
2. Verify control of an accepted university email.
3. Optionally describe yourself and choose whether to meet your university, any university, or selected schools.
4. Choose text or video and enter the shared matching pool.
5. Talk one-to-one, then stop, report, or find someone new.

2. Choosing your university

Your selection is saved in your browser so you normally choose it only once. It determines the accepted email domain, available campus or location choices, and the verified university shown to a match.

Supported communities are the University of Toronto, University of Waterloo, University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, McGill University, McMaster University, Queen’s University, Western University, York University, and Wilfrid Laurier University. Verified students share a matching pool, while university-reach preferences control which schools can match.

If you change universities after verification, you must verify an eligible address for the new university. Browser storage cannot override the university attached to a server-verified session.

3. Student-email verification

Enter the university email associated with your selected school. toblues emails a six-digit code that expires after ten minutes. Successful verification creates a random session token that generally remains valid for 30 days.

The token is stored on your device and its cryptographic hash is stored by the server. The verified session records a one-way truncated hash of the email and the applicable university. Your full email is not shown to matches.

Verification proves control of an eligible email account at that moment. It does not independently prove someone’s name, age, current enrolment, intentions, or safety. Code requests and attempts are limited to prevent spam and abuse.

4. Your optional profile

You may share a campus or location where meaningful, year of study, gender, and program or major. Blank fields stay blank. Matches see only the optional details you submit—not your email, legal name, student number, network address, or verification code.

Your selections remain saved on your device for convenience and are sent to the server when you request a match. Avoid entering identifying or sensitive information in profile fields or messages.

5. Matching preferences

“Any university” searches all supported schools and is usually fastest. “My university” stays local. “Choose schools” lets you select one or more specific universities, including your own. You may also filter by campus or location, gender, program or major, and year. Campus preferences apply only when the candidate attends your own university; they never accidentally exclude an otherwise compatible student from another school.

A match occurs only when both people accept each other under their respective choices. If a filtered search takes a while, “Match anyone this time” may appear. Choosing it searches every university without other filters only for that attempt. Your saved preferences remain unchanged, and the other person’s preferences are still respected.

6. How matching works

Text and video use separate shared first-compatible queues. When you search, the server considers chat mode, both students’ verified universities, both sets of university-reach and optional profile preferences, and recent-match history. Cross-university matching is mutual: for example, a UBC student selecting Waterloo can match a Waterloo student whose reach includes UBC or all universities.

toblues avoids matching the same pair twice consecutively. This can mean two otherwise compatible people continue waiting until each has matched someone else. Separate sessions verified with the same email are treated as the same person and cannot match each other.

An online or waiting count is not a promise that every person is compatible: they may be using another mode, excluded by mutual preferences, already chatting, or blocked by immediate-repeat protection.

7. Text conversations

Messages are delivered only while both users remain in the same active room. Press Enter to send or Shift+Enter for a new line. Desktop users can insert emoji shortcuts into the current draft. Typing indicators are temporary and are not part of the retained transcript.

Messages have length and frequency limits to protect the service from spam, resource exhaustion, and automated abuse. The other person may stop at any time without explanation.

8. Video conversations

Video mode requests camera and microphone access from your browser. Media normally travels directly between participants using encrypted WebRTC. When the users’ networks prevent a direct connection, encrypted media may pass through toblues’ TURN relay. The platform does not currently record video or audio.

Direct peer-to-peer media can reveal network information to the other peer. The service records limited pseudonymous connection-status events—such as attempting, connected, retried, or failed—to measure reliability, but does not include media, messages, SDP, ICE candidates, or device details in those diagnostic events. Another user may record their screen with tools beyond our control, so treat every conversation as potentially recordable.

9. Conversation controls

• Stop: immediately ends your current conversation.
• Escape: on desktop, the first press asks for confirmation; press again within five seconds to stop.
• New match: returns to the relevant queue after a chat ends.
• Report: submits a safety reason and available conversation context for review.
• Mute mic: disables or restores your outgoing audio in video mode.
• Back: leaves the conversation and returns to setup.

Closing, refreshing, suspending, or losing connectivity may also end a live match.

10. Messages, reports, and retained data

For moderation and abuse investigation, toblues retains the newest 100 completed chat records, with up to 300 messages and technical size ceilings per chat. Older chat archives are automatically removed as newer ones arrive. Reports may retain associated evidence longer where needed for safety, legal compliance, or investigation.

11. What toblues cannot guarantee

Verification and moderation reduce some risks but cannot guarantee identity, truthfulness, compatibility, good behaviour, uninterrupted availability, or a match. Preferences may delay matching. Video quality depends on devices and networks. Moderation may be incomplete or delayed.

Use your judgment, end uncomfortable conversations promptly, and review the Safety Centre before using text or video.
